Often, companies doubt service reliability of large Cloud providers such as Microsoft, Amazon, or Oracle ... Let's take a closer look at the issue and compare the situation when data is stored in a public Cloud, with the situation when we prefer data processing "at home".

Let’s use an analogy of security of our money stored in a bank. How safe is our money in a drawer, compared to a massive vault in a bank? If thieves were interested in our money, it would be easier for them to get into our drawer than into a bank. On the other hand, thieves who are not interested specifically in our money but money in general, will certainly target the bank vault, and, if they are successful, will also steal our money.

From this point of view, it is clear that if we wanted to compete in data security with companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, or Oracle, we would need more financial resources and experts than most companies can afford.

Hence, the "vaults" of big players will always attract the "invaders" more than our drawers at home. However, it is unlikely that the global failure of data centres of these giants would be duplicated and our data stolen together with it. Data volumes that are stored in these data centres nowadays exceed the capacity of commonly available means. This way, such an attack would cause a service failure at worst.

Isolated regions? What is it?

And here we come to the 'mystery' of the existence of regions in the supply of the largest Cloud suppliers. Various isolated regional Cloud providers' centres are created, which often confuses those interested in the Cloud. Businesses therefore face the question, which region to set up their account in, but this question is not so significant.

The selection of a region becomes more important when a company wants to manage the risks of potential threat to their data or activities (disaster recovery policy). Properly configured solution in case of failure of one region can transfer responsibility to another region and the user will not even notice the Armageddon in the original centre.

Regions can play a 'secondary' role in the selection as well, but these concern complex Cloud architectures of bigger companies, which we can deal with in case of problems. Young companies are generally recommended to set up Cloud services in a region as close to the seat of the company as possible. If your company is registered in the EU, it’s not wrong to choose any of the states of the EU.
